Elizabeth Chauvin Latiolais grew up south of New Orleans in a small town called Houma, LA. Growing up in this small town, she often dreamed of traveling the world. She "collects" degrees and certifications. E moved to Lafayette after finishing her Master in Social Work. Met Oscar and completed a yoga teacher certification. She finally settled down and married Os. After moving to Houston, E completed a massage therapy and cycling (Spinning) certification. Since our last trip, E has completed two sprint triathlons and plans to bring her bike on their next trip in hope of continuing her training and possibly even competing abroad.
Oscar Latiolais is unique. That's a politically correct term for 'nutball'. In 2001 he considered chartering a boat for a few weeks... just to sail around the islands. It didn't take long for him to scrap that idea, and jump back into boating with both feet. He got back in touch with the water he loved so much, and began sailing as much as possible.
So... the adventure began. They moved aboard a little sailboat and started day sailing. Then, an overnighter. Soon they were out in the Gulf of Mexico, heading for Port Aransas for a week, with the "girls." In 2005, an entire month was enjoyed sailing down the Texas gulf coast with Sarah and Sydney; Sarah is Oscar's little girl, and Sydney is E's neice. They are the same age and enjoy spending time together and sometimes enjoy sailing around. They have had many adventures of their own including finding a treasure map in Florida one year on summer vacation....
E & O's lifestyle soon evolved into two "seasons." Working half of the year and saving money... sailing the other half of the year to wherever the wind blew them. The next "season" found them in the Bahamas. The year after that they sailed to Mexico. As luck would have it, their wonderful employers would take them back at each "changing of the seasons."
September 13th, 2008, Hurricane Ike marched into south Texas and changed the lives of thousands of people. Oscar and Elizabeth tied up the boat, removed a few "valuables," and evacuated. Practically every other vessel in SOEL's vicinity was either sunk, dismasted, tossed on land, or otherwise completely destroyed. But, by some miracle, their little floating home survived. They took that as a sign, and decided to go sailing!
